An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
