England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
