Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
